Acoustics

We have knowledge and experience for many years' standing in the field of what is called “acoustics”. Acoustics comprises a number of specialist work areas. Below you find a selection of acoustic disciplines for which we are your perfect partner.

AUDITORIUM AND ROOM ACOUSTICS

One of the most important factors that determine a person’s experience of a room is the acoustic behaviour. (the acoustic). However the appreciation of the acoustic depends of the room use. In conference halls and in playhouses (drama theatres) speech intelligbility is of the utmost importance. Reverberation and background noise deteriorate intelligibility and have therefore to be avoided.

With music however, reverberation has a valuable contribution to a good sound quality, especially when you are surround by the musical sound. Envelopment and spaciousness are important aims to achieve. And in a landscape office speech privacy is one of the challenges.

Auditorium and room acoustics need specific attention in, for: example:

  • Theatres
  • Concert halls
  • Pop venues
  • Rehearsal Spaces
  • Practice rooms
  • Conference rooms
  • Landscape offices
  • Lecture rooms
  • Atriums
  • Sports and Arena Halls

We have a considerable experience in complex auditorium acoustics. Through our practical experience we are able to use advance design tools to their best advantage, such as: computer modelling including auralization, physical scale modelling including auralization and the unique experience of listening in the acoustic of the hall that is not yet built. This real time and scale 1 : 1 modelling is created by means of our unique and proprietary electronic acoustic architecture design tool (a real hall with stage and audience seating and fully adjustable acoustics). For example a full size symphony orchestra can play on the stage of this “virtual hall”.

Needless to mention that we have the most advanced acoustic measurement techniques available..

Of course also less complicated acoustic projects are in the capable hands of ours.

It is our aim to integrate the acoustic treatment and elements in the architectural image of the space as intended by the architect and the client. Because;

A good acoustic is heard, not seen.

BUILDING ACOUSTICS

Building acoustics comprises all factors and issues that determine the acoustic quality of buildings and their environment.

A complex project incorporating all thinkable acoustic subjects like a pop or other performance venue, or a “simple” check if a design for your house apartment or office building meets the acoustic building regulations, we offer you the right advice.

ELECTROACOUSTICS

Sound reinforcement and Public Address systems are today an integral part of buildings where people come together: theatres, concert halls, pop venues, conference and education buildings, public transport areas and buildings (railway and stations, airport terminals) etc. The aim of such systems is to achieve or improve speech intelligibility and music enjoyment..

Outside performance spaces electroacoustics play a significant role: distribution of (background) music, show relay sound and announcements in audience areas (entrance hall, foyers), backstage areas (dressing rooms, green room, offices, stage areas). Special applications are, among others:

– show sound relay systems in a performance hall for audience members and artists as well who have impaired hearing
– emergency evacuation systems (with speech announcements)which meet technical and acoustic regulations(intelligibility!)are need expert advice and design.

NOISE AND VIBRATION CONTROL

Today airconditioning, fans, pumps and many other installations are an integral part of a building. For reasons of comfort, efficient energy consumption, energy conservation, ensurance of sustainability, we cannot imagine our living environment without them.

But all these technical installations produce noise themselves and/or transport other noise throughout a building. :

Some noise issues that can occur:

  • Noise emission to the environment of for example (kitchen) air extraction, ventilation systems, cooling machines/condensers
  • Sound emission to the environment of (music) through ventilation systems (ducts etc.).
  • Background noise in rooms of a building as a result of motor, fan, and air flow resistance
  • Short cut of sound insulation between rooms caused by cross talk through air ducts and grilles
  • Noise of sanitary installations
  • Vibration in building structures caused by certain installations and/or by audiences during a rock concert, dance event etc. Vibration is not only a cause of nuisance for people present in the building, it can even in particular be a serious safety risk for the building structure and herewith a safety risk for people.

In all these fields we use the most sophisticated measurement and calculation techniques. These include for example:
– computer modelling (sound insulation, background noise, auditorium and room acoustics)
– physical scale modelling (sound insulation, background noise, auditorium and room acoustics)
– real situation modelling (sound insulation, background noise, auditorium and room acoustics)
These modelling techniques include calculations, measurements as well as auralization. Auralization means that the client, architect, user etc. of a newly designed not yet existing building or a refurbishment design for an existing building can already hear and judge how the design will sound.
Needless to say that this is a very powerful design tool for optimization of a plan and for realistic expectations with all parties involved.
